What is an MSK ultrasound

An MSK (musculoskeletal) ultrasound uses sound waves to examine muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and other soft tissue structures. It is commonly used to assess shoulders, knees, ankles, elbows, wrists and other joints.

Why might it be requested

MSK ultrasound may be requested to investigate tendon pain, joint swelling, suspected tears (e.g. rotator cuff, Achilles tendon), sports injuries, or to guide injection procedures such as steroid or hyaluronic acid injections.

How should I prepare

No special preparation is usually needed. If a guided injection is planned at the same appointment, your clinic may ask you to avoid eating or drinking beforehand, or to avoid blood-thinning medication - this varies by clinic and type of injection. Always follow the specific instructions given by your clinic.

What should I wear

Wear or bring clothing that exposes the area being examined. For a shoulder scan, a vest top or sleeveless top is helpful. For a knee or ankle scan, shorts or loose trousers that can be rolled up are useful. You may be asked to change into a gown.

What happens during the scan

Gel is applied to the skin over the affected area and a probe is moved over the joint or muscle. You may be asked to move the joint into specific positions or perform gentle movements to help assess the structures. If the scan is combined with a guided injection, the injection is given after the scan confirms positioning.

Will it hurt

The scan itself is generally not painful, although pressure over a sore area may cause mild discomfort. A guided injection may cause some discomfort at the injection site.

How long does it take

Approximately 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the joint and whether an injection is being performed.

When will I get results

Results are sent to your referring clinician for discussion at a follow-up appointment.

When should I contact the clinic

Contact your clinic if you are taking blood-thinning medications and an injection is planned, or if you have any questions about what to expect.
